Don Gillespie of Peter's Publishing (Cage's music publisher), invited me to work with him and his colleague Gene Caprioglio, to create a video realization of Cage's "49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs." Don, very familiar with the piece, was excited about making the first lasting visual as well as aural version of the graphic score. Staying true to Cage's commitment to chance activities, we created a 120 minute interpretation using a rotating tripod head to allow for sound and visual surprises of passing people and events. Andrew Culver, Cage's assistant for the last 11 years of his life, performed the chance operations for Cage and for us as well. Through chance means, (in this case, the I Ching), Culver determined the on screen duration of each "waltz."

This piece was originally designed to be a part of the Cage retrospective show ROLYHOLYOVER A CIRCUS, and was shown at random times in the Media Space of the Soho Guggenheim Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among other venues.

I am not interested in the names of movements but rather in seeing and making things not seen before.
